Whether you’re getting ready for sweater weather with cozy knits, preparing for autumn’s crisp equestrian look, or revitalizing your wardrobe with a vibrant Barbie pink, the handbags, shoes, jewelry, and color trends of fall are ready to put the playfulness back in getting dressed.

With sequins, leather, and a bit of lace, this season’s statement embraces indulgent moods and eclectic attitudes.

To inspire your wardrobe palette, Harley David, owner and fashion director at Harley David LLC, located at 1001 Broad St., Utica, is here to reveal the trends everyone can expect to see.

A daring take on distressed leather outdid itself across the runway. From James Dean and Maverick styled bomber jackets to pants, laced-up dresses, tank tops, skirts, handbags, and outerwear, clothing is taking on a sexier edge by incoporating leather — both real or faux – across the board.

Suggestion: Consider pairing a distressed leather jacket with a lace dress and oversized colored tote.

Let’s talk grunge

Prepare for a resurgence of vintage T-shirts and cargo pants as more Y2K trends come back around. Gritty undertones provide a strong denim influence, while its oversized, baggy style adds a touch of pandemic comfort. While ripped jeans and shredded fabric are still trending, puddle jumpers and wide-legged jeans dominate the mature version of this season’s trend.

Suggestion: Pair a nice cotton T-shirt with oversized puddle jumper jeans. For the office, play with a street style-mix with a pinstripe blazer and navy leather pencil skirt.

There’s an edgy version of prep on the rise which puts a twist on classic pleated skirts and blazers. Look for school girl, tennis, and low rise mini skirts, oversized shirts, sweater vests, and tweed blazers with elbow pads. In this look, chunky platforms and clogs add a touch of modernity, while old favorites like Mary Janes and loafers bring a playful nature.

Suggestion: A pleated mini skirt is a must-have in every preppy wardrobe. Consider complementing this staple with an oversized blazer and colored clogs.

Sequins and rhinestones will be the stand out of the season. As if in repudiation of the pandemic’s warm hoodies and lounge sets, designers embraced the need to feel swanky and pretty again, showcasing sequined dresses, crystal-embellished crop tops, and other shiny things. No longer considered event-worthy, this eye-catching fun frenzy will be seen on everything from suits to denim and even pants.

Suggestion: Don’t wait for the holidays to embrace the high shine. Throw on a metallic maxi dress with a leather blazer or pair sequin trousers with a white top or cable knit sweater.

Classic autumnal tones like gray, vanilla-latte beige, browns, and creams will remain classic neutrals. However, instead of the typical orange and red accents, this year’s must-have colors are deep blue, golden yellow, and - the surprising statement color of the season - fuchsia pink.

Suggestion: Scared to play with color? Try pairing a cotton white T-shirt with a tan blazer, black trousers (or leather pants if you’re ready to go for it), and throw on a vibrant pink or blue scarf.

Oversized leather totes, hobo bags, and detailed hardware will be the rage this year. From sculptural handles to chunky chains, handbags are finding a way to incorporate drama, fun, and luxury in every detail. However, one of the unexpected surprises of the season might be the return of the briefcase. A new take on the work bag, briefcases are setting the stage for drama as they arrive in distressed leather, complete with buckles and colors – like deep blue and pink.

Suggestion: Dominate this season’s trend with the bold colors and hardware that purses are featuring. Offset grunge wear with a yellow beaded handbag, compliment preppy styles with an oversized hobo bag, or scream Barbie pink with a leather pink flap bag against your office apparel. Above all, have fun and allow who you are to shine in your wardrobe.
